Spiral binding (frequently called plastic coil binding) is a highly reliable mechanical binding process. After your document is printed, our heavy-duty industrial punches strike precise, evenly-spaced circular or oval holes along the entire spine of the document stack. A continuous, flexible plastic coil (resembling a spring) is then mechanically spun through these holes from top to bottom. The ends of the plastic coil are then crimped and bent inwards using specialized pliers to lock the pages securely in place.
Unlike comb binding, which uses separate plastic 'teeth' that can sometimes pop open under stress, the continuous threading of a spiral coil ensures pages cannot accidentally tear out. Furthermore, because the coil is made of highly flexible PVC plastic, it has a "memory" effect. If the spine gets crushed inside a heavy student backpack, the plastic coil will simply bounce back to its original circular shape. This durability makes it vastly superior to metallic wiro binding for daily, rigorous usage.
The singular most highly praised feature of spiral binding is its 360-degree rotation. The pages have no resistance along the spine, enabling the document to lay 100% flat on a desk without needing to weigh down the edges. This is highly crucial for students solving practice sets or musicians reading sheet music.
Furthermore, you can completely fold the cover and the read pages all the way to the back. This effectively halves the physical footprint of the book on crowded desks. Perfect bound books (soft binding) or glued hardcover binding simply cannot achieve this, as forcing those bindings to open completely flat will permanently crack the spine glue.
Although spiral binding is highly versatile, correct digital file configuration ensures a perfect print. The coil requires approximately 8mm to 10mm of space along the binding edge. Therefore, writers must leave a left margin (or 'gutter margin') of at least 15mm (0.6 inches) in their Word processors to ensure text does not get punched out.
